Links

You can use a variety of placeholders in the character description (as well as in other texts on this webiste, such as the Forums or your Reviews) in order to create links to other Characters, Stories or Places.

Syntax of Links

A link is surrounded by percent symbols (%) and contains then type and the name of the object you are linking to.
Examples are:

  • %STORY:The Dark Tower%
  • %CHARACTER:Randall Flagg%
  • %PLACE:Castle Rock%

Placement of links

You can place links right in the middle of any text you are writing. For example:

...He was the first person to enter %CHARACTER:Leland Gaunt%'s store since he opened it up in %PLACE:Castle Rock%.

will become:

...He was the first person to enter Leland Gaunt's store since he opened it up in Castle Rock.

Checking links

From my own experience i know that it's easy to mistype these links. So: please double check if your references work by either of these two ways:

  1. After you have uploaded your character description to the server, choose the "Server|Show the selected character's page on the WebSite" menu item. This will open a browser window showing the page with your character, where you can check to see if all links work as expected.
  2. Before entering a link, you can use the "Server|Test link..." menu item. A dialog will appear where you can enter a link such as "%STORY:Bag of Bones%", and a browser window will open with the page that this would link to (if you have mistyped the link or the object does not (yet) exist in the database, you will receive a page with the "Object not found in database" message).

Using links elsewhere

You can also use these links in your reviews and postings to the forums. However, you must be cautious because (for now) you have no way of testing these links in Reviews and Forums, until you have submitted your text. (But i'm planning to implement that, when i find the time ;)
